Press Release 18 March 2004

Cardpoint expands into Europe with its first live cash machine in Germany

Cardpoint plc (“Cardpoint” or “the Group”), the provider of electronic payment transactions, has expanded into Europe with its first live cash machine (or Automated Teller Machine or “ATM”) in Germany.

Germany has 50,500 ATMs in bank locations with 5,500 of these in ‘remote’ or off-site locations (Source: Retail Banking Research – February 2004). This makes the German market larger than the UK market and at present it remains relatively untapped by independent deployers of ATMs. The German market is a non-surcharge market where interchange fees generally range from €3.50 to €5.50 payable to the ATM owner or operator by most banks.

Cardpoint already operates nearly 2,100 cash machines in the UK where it has developed a robust operating model. Its business model has been modified for the German market positioning Cardpoint for further strong controlled profitable growth. Cardpoint forecasts that it will have 30 cash machines deployed in Germany by the summer with 75 by the end of 2004.

Cardpoint’s German business is supported by three key partners including Wincor Nixdorf for cash machines and service provision, Transaction Network Services (TNS) for the communications infrastructure and a German sponsor bank, with the machines featuring the Cardpoint brand. These partners, with their own European presence, will help facilitate Cardpoint’s entry into other countries.

Mark Mills, Chief Executive Officer of Cardpoint plc, said: “Deployment of Cardpoint cash machines in to Germany is an exciting step forward for the Group as it represents a major business opportunity and provides us with a firm platform for further expansion. Our operating model has allowed us to develop rapidly here in the UK over the last four years and we believe that this can be replicated successfully in the German marketplace where the margins are significant and once we have reached a certain scale, will generate higher future returns for our Shareholders.”

Andrew Martin, Business Development Director of Cardpoint Group plc, added: “We have selected Germany for its relative infancy, enthusiastic retailers seeking to benefit from the provision of an ATM and high service levels afforded by our suppliers, some of whom we already use in the UK.”

Cardpoint

Cardpoint plc is a leading provider of electronic payment transactions, which owns and operates nearly 2,100 ATMs and approximately 3,500 mobile phone top-up terminals across the UK.

The ATMs are typically placed in convenience stores, shopping centres, motorway service stations, hospitals and train stations, and in areas that are not traditionally serviced by other ATM providers, thereby offering their customers greater convenience and access to cash. The Company typically charges £1.75 per cash withdrawal, with their customers’ permission, and receives transaction revenues for balance enquiries and card rejections. Cardpoint recently announced significant contract wins in the UK with motorway service area operators Welcome Break and Roadchef.

Cardpoint is a full member of the LINK Network, the only branded shared network of ATMs and self-service terminals in the UK, which allows 95 million cardholders of every member financial institution to use the ATM of another LINK member.

The mobile top division, acquired in July 2003, trades under the name of ‘Cardpoint Merchant Services’ and operates in retail outlets such as MOTO, Costcutter, Spar and Londis and allows user to top up for Vodafone, Orange, o2, T-Mobile and Virgin.
